Comparison of virtual reality environment modalities

Navigation research commonly involves having participants find their way within virtual reality environments, with such environments being presented either via a desktop computer (nonimmersive, desktop VR) or via a headset-mounted display using a system such as the HTC Vive (immersive, headset-mounted VR). A number of studies have compared real-world and virtual navigation, but investigation of potential differences across immersive and nonimmersive VR environments remains limited. This line of research aims to address this gap, and preliminary findings suggest that individual difference factors may affect how similar navigation performance is across desktop and headset-mounted navigation tasks.
