A major focus of my research has been how individual difference factors, such as age and personality variables (especially differences in motivation-related tendencies) influence navigational ability and navigation strategy preferences. For example, I am currently working on a study to investigate how anxiety-related personality traits influence individuals’ ability to navigate within virtual environments that, by design, promote certain types of navigation strategies (e.g., learning stimulus-response associations between landmarks vs. learning the overall layout of the environment).
